Studying music benefits people by improving and enhancing other areas of study. It does this by developing the brain’s ability to process information and think in a new way, increasing the ability and desire to pursue a further education, and of course it develops reading and communication skills. That is why in the wise words of the Greek philosopher Plato, we see this universal truth: “ Music gives a soul to the universe, wings to the mind, flight to the imagination, and life to everything.”
For the best results in music, it is good to start studying at the age of five or six. However, at GSMS you can start at any age. Our basic program is designed for those who have some musical abilities, talent, or just a passion for the subject. Here, we start with an audition to check their inner ability to distinguish the pitch of musical tones, rhythm patterns, and the ability to hear harmony. At the beginning, our students play simple melodies and gradually enhance the difficulty level. For this program we recommend that students continue working with us for at least three to four months to see if our teaching methods, personal ability, and passion match their needs and create the results they desire. This is a less rigid program and allows the students to schedule lessons as they please. If you are a beginner with no experience, don't worry. We have experience with all different skill levels. I promise once you start you want want to stop! Practicing doesn’t have to be boring.
For those who are serious about studying music, we have yearly programs. In this case, for instruments like the violin, viola, and piano we have a course of study for seven years. The course includes private lessons consisting of 30-45 min at least one time a week, music theory, and solfeggio. The program also requires the students to participate in semi-yearly recitals and attend some music fieldtrips and concerts. For guitar classes, voice, conducting, and other instruments, the program is five years long. These courses also include all the theoretical lessons and recitals. Upon completing the program of study, the student will receive a certificate of completion. Our music lessons work best when there is an actively working relationship between the teacher, parent and student. Our approach involves a healthy balance between structure and fun personal achievement.
Even professional violinists sometimes find their violin playing sounds scratchy and noisy! With the damping effect of a concert hall the audience won't hear the scratch - only the beautiful music.
Our custom programs are created for the most serious of students who desire to continue studying music in colleges and universities. These programs require the commitment of continuing the course for nine years at the rate of at least two lessons a week. This is a much deeper study of the course. In this program, students participate in a lot more concerts and recitals. This gives the students an opportunity to learn how to be comfortable playing on stage and in orchestras. In the custom program our students play in duets, trios, quartets and ensembles, and have extensive practice playing with a piano.
